How Does Your Garden Grow?

Whenever possible, our students are given the opportunity to explore leisure activities that might be of interest to them. For the past few years, Classroom 715 has been learning about plants thanks to Summit Academy teacher, Reaghan Wirley, and her team. This year they took the activity one step further by growing vegetables: cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, kale, jalapenos, and more!

Pictured below is Chloe, a student who has had fun tending to different vegetables as well as spider plants.

The students have been taking the plants home to enjoy with their family.

Smallwood Supports Summit

Smallwood Drive Elementary School is filled with talented students who put their artistry to work for The Summit Center.  The 5th graders had the opportunity to submit a design for a t-shirt that they felt raised awareness for autism. More than 60 designs were submitted! The school voted on the final design which was transformed into a t-shirt. The shirts were then sold to raise funds for Summit.

In the end, the Smallwood community presented Summit with a check for $700!

Special Education Teacher Katie Marzocchi says "We hope to make this an annual tradition in our school and continue to support the great work The Summit Center is doing in our community."

Thank you, Grigg Lewis Foundation!

The Grigg Lewis Foundation has been a friend to The Summit Center for many years. Last month, we were thrilled to learn that they awarded Summit a $25,000 grant to strengthen our Early Autism Program. Through the Early Autism Program, young children under the age of five learn vital communication, social, and self-help skills. Teachers use the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis with the primary goal to prepare children for kindergarten. In some cases, children can move on to elementary school with little to no supports.

Progress through the Early Autism Program can also be driven by the family's needs. For one family, it was important that they participate in church services together. The teacher joined the family at their church and systematically built skills so they could attend each week. Another parent wanted their child to feel comfortable at the dentist. The teacher designed a plan to desensitize the child to the environment and met the family at the dentist's office to ensure it was successful.

Fact of the Month

Celebrities Dan Aykroyd, Daryl Hannah, and David Byrne (of the Talking Heads) have all been diagnosed with autism.
